There are three categories of relationships that we need to know about in order to properly place people where they belong. The categories are:
– Distant Relationships,
– Close Relationships, and
– Intimate Relationships.
Everyone in the world should belong to this category. We need people in our lives because no one is an island and we don’t know when we might need the help of others hence we can’t afford to shut everyone out of our lives. Regardless of that, everyone shouldn’t be brought close. Everyone doesn’t deserve the opportunity to know us deeply. The less people know about us, the better our lives because knowledge is power and anyone can use what they know against us and even if they don’t, giving people such opportunity gives them a hold on us and can lead to hurt in case of disappointments.
People in this category are people that we are obliged to relate with as a result of work, where we live, etc. Our families, colleagues and neighbours know us to an extent whether we like it or not, whether we tell them certain things or not. Relationships with people in this category should be treated with tact so that we do not over-expose ourselves to them. People in the first category shouldn’t be in this category, it’s an upgrade, yes, but not a necessary upgrade.
Not more than two people should belong to this category; your spouse and God. These are beings you can hide nothing from; they know you inside and out. They know you more than you know yourself. They shouldn’t be lied to or deceived. Relationships with them should be a transparent one. People in the second category shouldn’t move into this category. In the event that they do, it shouldn’t be more than one person since there are just two spaces, the one for God is taken obviously but for the spouse, it’s just one space left. More than one person shouldn’t occupy the space meant for one person.
That said, I hope you’ve thought of all the people in your life right now and mentally put them in their categories. If you’ve not, make sure you do. The less people know about you, the less chances people have to hurt you. Mingle wisely.
